HEP CATS HOLIDAY NUMBER 19
FRIDAY 7th -
Pontin’s Sand Bay, Kewstoke,Weston-
THE HEP CATS HOLIDAY JACK & JILL CONTEST!
WIN FREE PLACES AT HEP CATS HOLIDAY WEEKENDS 2018
The “Jack & Jill” dance contest was created and named by the legendary California swing dancer Jack Carey in the early 1950s. The basic principle is that partners are drawn at random and the essence of the competition is one of improvisation rather than choreography.
Obviously this is swing/jitterbug contest which can include popular swing dances of the era, including Lindy Hop (6 & 8 Count), Shag, Balboa, Charleston and regional and related derivatives and variations such as Boogie Woogie and even Jive.
RULES: All moves are permitted apart from Aerial Steps and Choreographed routines. The dancing must show a high degree of swing dance authenticity.
Judges will be looking at technique, timing, musicality, improvisation and, especially, lead and follow. Dancers must respect and not endanger other competitors on the floor.
PRIZES: Two free places at a Hep Cats Holiday in 2018, including accommodation, breakfast & dinner, all entertainment and classes. (Please note: this does not include travel and there is no cash alternative)
SIGN UP: Will be on the Friday evening between 3pm -
The contest is free to enter and there will be no advance registration before the event. Please note: The Jack & Jill contest is only open to residents attending the Hep Cats’ Holiday weekend.
There will be no competitor briefing before the contest. Numbers will be allocated on sign up and competitors should meet at 10.45pm in reception.
THE HEATS: Will take place on Friday evening between the two bands (around 11pm ). Partners will be drawn at random and dance to three tracks chosen by the organisers. At the end of the first and second track partners will be rotated. Six leads and follows will be chosen to go through to the final.
THE FINALS: Are on Saturday evening at around 11.15pm. All competitors should be in the main Ballroom and ready to dance at 11pm. Partners will be chosen at random. From this point onwards they will dance and be judged as a couple. If you should end up with a regular dance partner you will be expected to swap.
The couples will then dance to one or two tracks and the winning couple will be chosen by audience response.
Exact timings may change nearer the time.
